Solar Eclipse: The Mythology and Vedic Astrology of Surya Grahan

The moment when the moon comes between the sun and the earth and engulfs the daylight to spread darkness. This spectacular phenomenon is known as the Surya Grahan (Solar Eclipse). The moon is often unable to cover the sun completely and this results into different types of Surya Grahan depending upon the magnitude of the grahan and the shadow cast over the earth.

TYPES OF SURYA GRAHAN:

  1. Partial Surya Grahan (Partial Solar Eclipse)It occurs when the moon only casts its penumbra over the earth by partially covering the sun.
  2. Total Surya Grahan (Total Solar Eclipse)
It occurs when the entire central region of the sun is completely blocked out by the moon and the umbra is cast in such a manner that one sees a total blackout.
  3. Annular Surya Grahan (Annular Solar Eclipse)
The term annular can be defined as “of a ring.” In this type of Surya Grahan, the moon is so far away that the umbra is unable to reach the earth and therefore, the middle portion of the sun is covered and this results in a ring of fire around the edges of the sun that is visible during the Grahan.

MYTHOLOGY OF ECLIPSES

The great God Bramha reveals to the gods and the asuras (who were the other group of super humans who fight with gods for supremacy) that there is an immortality giving elixir of life in a pot at the bottom of the sea. Whoever drinks this elixir will become immortal.

Neither the gods nor the demons had the necessary capability to churn the great oceans. Hence they agree to cooperate. Using the great snake Sheshanaga as the rope and the mountain Mainak as the shaft, they began churning the seas. Several strange things happen during the churning as the sea keeps throwing out a variety of items before the nectar can be given out.

After several complications, they eventually succeed. However, when the elixir (called amrit –the one that prevents death) eventually comes, the asuras become dishonest. Then Lord Vishnu takes the form of a beautiful maiden named Mohini (“the one who enchants”). The asuras were completely mesmerised by her beauty and completely forget about the nectar. Mohini calmly takes the pot. She instructs the gods and the asuras to sit in two parallel lines so that she can systematically distribute the Amrit.

However, she begins by distributing it to the gods. While most asuras remain oblivious to the trickery, one of them, called Swarbhanu realises the trick and quietly goes and sits in the line with the gods. Mohini dutifully hands out the nectar to him but before he can take it the Sun and the Moon realise what is happening and complain. Mohini immediately cuts off the head of Swarbhanu.

However, since Swarbhanu has already tasted the nector he becomes immortal. The head of the slain but living three demon is then cared for by his mother and is called Rahu. The body, looked after by another priest is called Ketu. However, Rahu and Ketu are both very angry with Sun and Moon and now spend all their time trying to take revenge on them. Hence the eclipses occur when Rahu gulps down Sun or the Moon. However, because Rahu is only a head, the Sun and the moon escape Rahu as he gulps them down. Since Rahu and Ketu also move in the sky like other planets, they are called dark or unseen planets. Their motion is also predictable and hence the ancient Indian practice is to worship 9 planets –Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu.

Later on, when Aryabhata gave the complete formulation of the eclipses, he used the concept of Rahu and Ketu to describe the ascending and descending nodes of the point of intersection of the Lunar and Solar orbits (Subbarayappa, 2008, Kochhar 2010). These are then transformed into specific moving points of a periodicity of 18.6 years and a conjunction of Rahu and Ketu with Sun and Moon are identified as periods of eclipse.

SURYA GRAHAN IN VEDIC ASTROLOGY

Rig Veda, the oldest document from India dated to between 1700 and 1400 BC, pronounces the phenomenon of the Solar eclipse in a mythical language. During the solar eclipse, the shadow planet Rahu covers the Sun, and the sun’s rays which are vital to the Earth and to all living things. The interruption of the Sun rays is not favorable.

During solar eclipses we don’t receive the light of the Sun (which is the light of life), but the emission of darkness emanating from Rahu (Rahu is a planet, the norther lunar node located at the intersection of the plane of the Moon orbit and the ecliptic). The eclipse removes or reduces solar energy (life-giving “prana”) for the whole Earth. So people and all creatures suffer.

During this period, consciousness is obscured, the mind is poorly oriented during the events. In general, a solar eclipse creates an adverse impact on society, and increases tension on it, and it also brings out destructive tendencies.

The eclipse also induced gravity waves causes a reduction in Ozone layer concentration in the stratosphere which allows more cosmic radiations of different wavelengths, to the surface of the earth. The research carried out about the radiations received during the past eclipses and its influence on seawater reveal the scientific knowledge behind Rishi Atri’s dispelling of darkness by the four Rigs, given in Pancavimsa Brahmana.

Hence, for the first time, the eclipse event is differentiated into a four stage process, as per our recent findings on the change in Oceanic pH. The influence of solar eclipse on living organisms, especially, the erratic behaviour of animals, birds and marine organisms to eclipse is addressed.

The research of medical scientists proved the undeniable influence of a solar eclipse on man. Medical research was conducted on dozens of healthy and sick people. Studies have shown that the human body begins to react to this natural phenomenon as soon as the sun’s disk is covered by Moon. Within an hour after the beginning of the eclipse, hypertensive patients that have high blood pressure, meaning the narrowing of the blood vessels, and the heart works harder to move the blood. The blood begins to flow unevenly into different hemispheres of the brain. The nervous system is clearly disabled. The doctors expected that all these phenomenon should occur only two days after the eclipse, when the cosmic rays from the Sun reached the Earth.

The Moon is the evening source of light, which is very close to us. The Sun gives energy (the masculine principle), and the Moon absorbs it (the feminine principle). When two bodies of light find themselves at one point during the eclipse, their energies exert the strongest influence on a person. In the body, there is a powerful load on the regulatory processes. Especially, this day would be bad for people with cardiovascular pathologies, hypertensive patients. It would also be bad for people who are currently undergoing treatment courses.

Even doctors say that on the day of the eclipse, it’s better not to engage in any activity, as actions will be inadequate and you will be more likely to make mistakes. To avoid discomfort with ill health, they recommend taking a contrast shower on this day (which, by the way, should be taken not only on days of solar eclipse, but regularly, every day). In the morning shower must be finished with cool water, it stimulates the body, and in the evening with warm water.

In 1954, the French economist Maurice Allais by observing the movement of the pendulum, noticed that during a solar eclipse, the pendulum began to move faster than usual. This phenomenon was called the Allais effect, but no one could understand it. Today, a new study of the Dutch scientist Chris Duif, confirms this phenomenon, but he also cannot explain it yet. The astrophysicist Nikolai Kozyrev learned the fact that eclipses act on people. He says that time transforms during the eclipse.

Scientific data on the development of an embryo, and certain studies show that the influence of the Sun’s rays is more powerful than the rays of Jupiter. Pregnant women are also not allowed to go out during the solar or lunar eclipses. And those who have neglected the danger and have done this gave birth to abnormal babies. The explanation of the connection between these events is not explained by modern science.

The consequences of an eclipse in the form of a powerful earthquake or other natural disaster is possible for even a week after the eclipse. In any case, an eclipse brings changes to the society.

During the lunar eclipse, the mind, the thinking and emotional spheres of people are highly vulnerable. The number of mental disorders in people increases. This is due to the disruption of the hypothalamus at the psychophysiological level, which corresponds to the Moon, according to the discovery of Tony Nader (Nader Radjah Rama). The hormonal cycle of the body can also be disturbed, especially in women. During a solar eclipse, work of the physiological correspondence of the Sun - the Thalamus is more disrupted, and the risk of cardiovascular disease increases, since the Sun controls the heart. Perception of Atma (“I”, pure consciousness) is clouded. The consequence of this may be an increase in tension, radical and aggressive trends in the world as well as dissatisfaction with the egos of politicians, or heads of a state.

Eclipses tend to have a strong negative result on:

  1. the geographical regions in which they occur
  2. in places where they are visible
  3. in areas of underground mining.

Studies on eclipses show that the probability of different types of catastrophes increases during the period of “influence of the eclipse. Some of the world leaders can get into a scandal, or experience some sort of tragedy. Powerful rulers can be blinded by anger, envy and ego. Also, illogical and unwise decisions made by world leaders are possible at this time. The pernicious Rahu rules secretive, immoral and cunning behavior, like a poisonous smoke that quietly creeps. Smugglers and terrorists often strike during the period of “the sphere of influence of the eclipse”. There may be riots or large food poisoning. Seismic activity is not excluded.

When hard times come, the best we can do is to turn ourselves to the Absolute. During eclipses, it’s better to think about peace in your country and the entire world. If people around you start to behave crazily during these tough times, be tolerant and sensitive. The best recommendation for lunar and solar eclipses is to rest.

Vedic Astrology principles explain that the below areas signified by the planets will be impacted during the solar eclipse.
  • The Sun represents the soul, power, authority, and advanced creative thinking
  • The Moon represents mind, intuition, mother, and money
  • Mercury controls communication, travel, and network
  • Jupiter represents fortune, luck, and prosperity
  • Saturn rules over career, health, and karma
  • Mars represents action, raw energy, stamina, passion, courage, and will power
  • Venus signifies relationship, money, health, beauty, creativity, happiness, and pleasures

The position of the planet changes drastically during Surya Grahan and this results into an inauspicious time known as ‘sutak’ that can actually affect the well-being of a person. Sutak begins 12 hours before the occurrence of the Surya Grahan and ends after the completion of the Grahan.

Most of us have seen that the temples remain closed during the Sutak period and therefore you must do something during this time to avoid any harm. And if you are pregnant, then extra care must be taken so that it has no ill-effects on your unborn child.

DO’S AND DON'TS DURING SUTAK AND SURYA GRAHAN

  1. According to popular belief, you must not eat anything during the Sutak and Surya Grahan. But for pregnant ladies, children, old and sick people this rule has been relaxed so that they must not eat only from 3 hours prior to the Grahan till its completion.
  2. It is said that pregnant women must not go outdoors during the Grahan because the negative impact of the malefic planets Rahu and Ketu may handicap the baby. Also,it is believed that the chances of miscarriage are very high during this time. They are advised not to cut or stitch anything because that might have a negative effect on unborn babies.
  3. The activities that are considered to be strictly prohibited during the Surya Grahan are drinking water, going to the washroom, sexual encounters, brushing teeth, combing hair and oil massage.
  4. In case you plan to witness the Surya Grahan, it is advised that you do not see it with naked eyes because the ultraviolet radiation of the sun can permanently damage your retina and make you blind.
  5. Do not leave the house (especially no traveling) and be indoors, do not drive or in case of extreme emergency, do it carefully.
  6. Avoid any financial transactions.
  7. It is advisable to chant holy mantras like the Gayatri Mantra, the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra, Vishnu Sahasranamam, Hanuman Chalisha and perform meditations during this time as it will spread positivity and neutralize the effects of Sutak and Surya Grahan.
WHAT TO DO AFTER THE GRAHAN SUBSIDES?

If you have any cooked food in your kitchen, then discard it immediately. Do your ablutions, purify yourself and wear clean clothes. Cook fresh food and make offerings to your ancestors and then you can go for some charity to Brahmins in order to pacify the planets as this would enhance your welfare.

Surya Grahan is one of the most important planetary movements that can have lasting impact on your life. Therefore, you must take care that you do not take it lightly and follow the suggested tips to keep you and your dear ones out of harm’s way. Life is extremely crucial, so protect yourself as much as you can!
